Camerino (MC)

Camerino is an Italian town in the Marche region, and is part of the province of Macerata. It is home to a University founded in medieval times.

Camerino is located in an elevated position, at 661 m a.s.l., located between the Chienti and Potenza valleys. In addition to the numerous prestigious churches, among which the Basilica of San Venanzio stands out, the Convent of the Capuchin fathers, in the locality of Renacavata, deserves a mention, because it was precisely here that the famous monastic order originated. Also worth mentioning is the Rocca Varano, which thanks to its position allowed it to exercise profitable dominion over the traveling merchants who passed through here as early as the 1300s. Today, partially restored, the ancient fortress is a craft center and venue for conferences, exhibitions and events.

Speaking of typical products and gastronomy, a true symbol of the traditions and culture of the noble Ducal City of Camerino is the nougat, whose origins are lost in time. The first documentary evidence in the Marche of the term torrone, referring to the Christmas cake as we understand it today, dates back to 1793, in a deed deposited with the Camerino notary Stefano Ricci, but it is legitimate to think that the "torrone di Camerino" was born many centuries first.
