Montalcino and the Val d'Orcia

The province of Siena and in particular the Val d’Orcia need no introduction, being among the most beautiful and fascinating places in the entire Italian peninsula. Thanks to the uniqueness of its landscapes and villages, the Val d’Orcia has been a cultural site of the UNESCO World Heritage..
Leaving to the many tourist guides and institutional sites the presentation of the more traditional tourist destinations in this "pearl" of Tuscany, Itinerarinelgusto.it instead wants to suggest some experiences related to the closest current events and, continuing on the path started a few weeks ago, wants to do it by spacing between food and wine and artistic expressions, in particular those linked to the territory.

Jazz & Wine a MontalcinoJazz & Wine a Montalcino fino a domenica 25 luglio 2021

Let's start with an event that will end on Sunday 25 July in Montalcino, a splendid village that immediately brings to mind one of the most representative red wines of Tuscany and of the entire Italian wine production, Brunello di Montalcino. We refer to “Jazz & Wine in Montalcino”, an event that combines great jazz and quality wine and which takes place for the twenty-fourth consecutive year. All the appointments scheduled from Friday to Sunday this week will have the Montalcino Fortress as stage, with the grand finale on Sunday entrusted to Alex Britti's guitar. The wine tourism content of the event is guaranteed by the commitment of the Banfi winery, a historic reality in the Montalcino area.

On the occasion of the last evening of Jazz & Wine, an extraordinary opening of the monumental complex of Sant’Agostino and the Enoteca Bistrot del Tempio del Brunello is scheduled from 7.30 pm, where you can wait for the concert in the evocative atmosphere of the cloisters. A special opportunity to visit the Brunello Temple, just opened, which offers an immersive and emotional journey, made possible thanks to the most modern technologies, to discover Brunello di Montalcino. For the occasion, the entire museum complex housed inside the former convent of Sant’Agostino, and the church of Sant’Agostino itself will be open to visitors in a new guise (info and reservations: orodimontalcino@operalaboratori.com).

In the surroundings of Montalcino (it is one of its fractions) San Giovanni d'Asso is also worth mentioning, a small village that has maintained its medieval aspect, located in the center of the territory that takes the name of Crete Senesi. A historic train also passes here, the "Nature Train", which travels between Grosseto and Siena, but only on particular dates to coincide with events in the area, or for large groups by reservation.
This area is also famous for the White Truffle of the Crete Senesi, and in fact San Giovanni d'Asso hosts, in addition to the splendid castle, the Truffle Museum (Call center: 0577 286300 active from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 17.00). In the surrounding area it is not difficult to come across wineries, oil mills and dairies, to try directly on the production site some of the excellences that have made Val d’Orcia famous also in terms of food and wine.

Just about thirty kilometers to move to San Quirico d’Orcia, where the artistic exhibition "Forme nel Verde" celebrates its 50 years of history in 2021. The fascinating aspect of this initiative is that it gives life to a real exhibition spread over the territory, which starts from San Quirico d'Orcia where, in the Horti Leonini, the sculptures of the artist Helidon Xhixha, Nebula, Corallo D 'are installed. Steel, Diversity, Mediterranean Rock and Steel Sound. The work Satellite is also installed in San Quirico, in Piazza Chigi, in front of the Collegiate Church.

Other monumental works are visible along the Via Francigena, in the stretch that leads from San Quirico to Pienza, and along the Via Cassia, in the center of the group of Cypresses, the undisputed icon of the image of Tuscany, where the Ionic Column work is located.
The exhibition goes as far as Siena, in Piazza del Duomo, with the suggestive work called Getto di Luce (go to the event page for more info and pictures).

And don't forget, in a stop for lunch or dinner along the way, to taste a nice plate of Pici, traditional pasta from Tuscany, which in Val d'Orcia finds "crumbs" as a typical condiment, that is a simple preparation made with oil extra virgin olive oil and stale bread, and a little chilli, anchovies and garlic, to give flavor and character to this particular sauce. Obviously accompanied by a good glass of Chianti!
