Gubbio (PG)

Gubbio is the municipality of the province of Perugia, in Umbria, with the largest municipal territory in the region. It is located at 522 meters above sea level. and is about 50km from Perugia. Gubbio rises at the foot of Mount Ingino and is crossed by the Camignano and Cavarello streams.

The history of Gubbio is linked to that of San Francesco, since the encounter with the "wolf", one of the best known miraculous episodes, took place near the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, known as the Vittorina. In Gubbio Francesco found asylum after leaving Assisi, and it was here that the true conversion took place. For this historical reason, the city is crossed by several paths traveled every year by thousands of pilgrims, all in the name of the saint. One of these is called the Assisi path.

In Gubbio today there is the Church of San Francesco, built in the second half of the 13th century near the warehouse of the Spadalonga family, which would have welcomed Francis after his abandonment of the paternal house and of Assisi. Other important churches are the Cathedral of Santi Mariano and Giacomo and the Church of San Giovanni Battista.

The town of Gubbio also hosts significant archaeological sites, including a Roman theater, dating back to the 1st century BC, located just outside the walls. Near the Roman theater there is a small but rich archaeological museum, built on the remains of a domus with beautiful mosaic floors.
In the month of May in Gubbio the Festa dei Ceri takes place every year, in honor of the patron saint of the city, St. Ubaldo, and in particular, on the last Sunday of May, the Palio della Balestra.
In the first week of October the city hosts the "Festival of the Middle Ages", a cultural event focused on historical disclosure, but which also includes films, historical re-enactments, shows and concerts.
