Cisterna di Latina

Cisterna di Latina

Cisterna di Latina is a town in the province of Latina in Lazio. The garden of Ninfa, a natural monument and WWF oasis, is part of its municipal territory. Cisterna di Latina rises on the border between the provinces of Rome and Latina, on the northern edge of the Agro Pontino, in an area that represents an agricultural center of ancient origins.

The enhancement and promotion of the typical products of the territory still remains one of the most important elements for this Lazio municipality, representing a combination of history, traditions and culture.

Palazzo Caetani can be elected as a monumental place and cultural symbol of the city, in the heart of the area of the historic village called "Cisterna Vecchia", located between Via dell’Anello - Via dei Fiori and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Palazzo Caetani was built between 1560 and 1574, by the will of Bonifazio Caetani, based on a project by the architect Francesco da Volterra, on the ruins of the ancient Frangipane fortress, of which it incorporated a square stone tower. It still has frescoes by the Zuccari brothers and by Girolamo Siciolante from Sermoneta today. In its basement, the famous Caves of Palazzo Caetani unfold, whose exact extent and purpose for which they were created is unknown, but which gave refuge to the population during the war.

Among the most significant products of the territory there is the extra virgin olive oil of the Pontine Hills, but also the cultivation of the vine has its own relevance.
