Chiuro (SO)

Chiuro is a town in the middle Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy. It is located at the mouth of the Val Fontana stream on the right bank of the Adda river, a few kilometers from Sondrio.

Chiuro is a village rich in history, since its origins are lost in prehistoric times, and in food and wine traditions, obviously linked to the traditional products of Valtellina, first of all the red wine produced from the "Nebbiolo delle Alpi". Chiuro is immersed in nature, surrounded by mountains and dominated by orchards and vineyards, which, with their suggestive terraces on the Rhaetian side, make the Valtellina landscape unique.

Its rich past has left numerous traces that embellish the historic center. Ideal starting point for excursions and walks, it offers tourists naturalistic preciousness and experiences in the name of the food and wine tradition.

Of particular interest was the discovery in 1959 of two prehistoric steles by Maria Reggiani Rajn. Today they are kept at the Valtellinese Museum of History and Art in Sondrio. The first stele is decorated on both sides, with a decoration dating back, according to experts, to the Aeneolithic (2200 - 1800 BC), while on the other side, where it represents an anthropomorphic figure that grasps a sort of halberd, it overlaps phases of engravings in which the last phase would be from the Middle Ages. The second stele, which shows a representation of a double-rim wheel with eight internal spokes, may also date back to the Aeneolithic.

In Chiuro, around the middle of September, one of the main events dedicated to Valtellina wines is organized, the "Grappolo d'Oro di Chiuro". Fragments of history, encounters with taste, moments of culture, entertainment and music are the background to the main protagonist of the event: Valtellina mountain viticulture.
