Cave (RM)

Cave is a town in the metropolitan city of Roma Capitale, in Lazio. It is located at the foot of the Prenestini Mountains, surrounded by chestnut and coppice woods, in a largely hilly area. It is only 40 km from Rome and between alleys and courtyards with the atmosphere of a medieval village. Cave was in fact one of the oldest medieval castles in Lazio, a fief of the Colonna family; and preserves some important medieval remains, including the vestiges of the ancient castle and its walls.

In addition to Palazzo Colonna and the tower, the keep of the ancient Cavense castle, Palazzo Mattei is the seat of the "Lorenzo Ferri" Civic Museum, which is one of the three sections of the Civic Museum Città di Cave.

For centuries the city of Cave has been known for the production of chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts and so has a very long tradition the "Chestnut Festival and Typical Products in Cave", which takes place annually at the end of October, offering, in addition to to the delicious fruit of the woods of Cave, also dishes of the local cuisine, such as the "gnocchetti a sassetto" and the typical dessert that is the "serpetta", so called from the typical shape to them.
