Bomarzo (VT)

Bomarzo is a town in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. The village is located in the heart of Tuscia, between the last north-eastern slopes of the Cimini mountains and the Tiber river valley, which marks the border with the Umbria region.

The historic center is divided into five districts: Nobile Rione Dentro (the medieval area around the Duomo and Palazzo Orsini); Antico Rione Borgo (consisting of the buildings around the main street that rises from the Castle area towards the new part of the town) Regale Rione Poggio (junction point between the historic part of the town and the new part); Arcigno Rione Croci (encloses the area in which the town has been urbanized more recently) and Rapace Rione Madonna del Piano (developed on the modern area of Bomarzo).

The most traditional festival in Bomanzo is the Palio di Sant’Anselmo, accompanied by the Biscuit Festival which, for almost half a century, in the last ten days of April, has opened the celebrations for the patron saint. The protagonist of the Biscuit Festival is a sort of sweet donut made with an ancient recipe that the local women jealously guard and which dates back to the 5th century. A.D. when the then bishop of the city, Anselmo, had a sweet bread produced, the Bread of Sant’Anselmo.

A particular attraction of the Lazio village is the "Parco dei Mostri", a monumental complex also known as "Sacro Bosco", located on the slopes of a natural amphitheater, which was built by Vicino Orsini in the sixteenth century. In the park there are monuments depicting monstrous and mythological animals.
