Bevagna (PG)

Bevagna, in the province of Perugia, has been included among the most beautiful villages in Italy thanks to its historic center of particular value where eras and artistic beauties have been stratified in a landscape of great beauty.

Umbrian center and then Roman municipality with the name of Mevania, the city of Bevagna experienced periods of great importance: the position of control on the ancient stretch of the Via Flaminia and the good environmental conditions favored the development of human settlement from the earliest ages. Bevagna had an important role also thanks to its river port on the Topino (whose waters, at the time navigable, flow into the Chiascio river and then into the Tiber), and also in medieval times it continued to be crossed by significant historical passages. The link with medieval history is today celebrated thanks to Il Mercato delle Gaite, a Medieval Historical Reenactment organized in June, when the four Gaite (districts) - San Giorgio, San Giovanni, Santa Maria and San Pietro - compete in four competitions: archery, the plate, the trade, the market.

Things to see and do in Bevagna

In Bevagna it is worth visiting the Civic Museum, consisting of a picture gallery and an archaeological collection. In the picture gallery, the works exhibited were made between 1550 and 1750 and offer a broad testimony of artistic production and local devotion. The archaeological section of Palazzo Lepri originates from the main nucleus of the archaeological finds which, during the 18th century, were donated to the city of Bevagna by the abbot Fabio Alberti. Over time, the archaeological collection has been enriched by other donations and finds and today it constitutes an important testimony of the city and its territory in the pre-Roman, Roman and late-ancient periods.

In a territory where it is easy to find good food and wine production there are many restaurants, taverns and wine bars where you can try traditional dishes, local products and wines linked to the Montefalco DOC.

In the surroundings, a visit to the Castelbuono Estate, owned by Tenute Lunelli, which has become famous both for the quality of its wines (the territory of Bevagna is one of the great lands of Sagrantino) and for the particular cellar designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, which recalls the structure of a carapace.

The territory and the surrounding hills lend themselves to walks and excursions immersed in nature, enjoying the splendid landscapes.
