Carnival in Lombardy

The Ambrosian Carnival is staged in Milan, an ancient event linked to a legend: Sant'Ambrogio, patron saint of the Lombard capital, engaged in a long pilgrimage, asked the population to wait for his return to the city before starting the Lent celebrations. For this reason, even today the Milanese carnival does not end with Shrove Tuesday and the Ashes rite, which opens the period of Lent, takes place on Sunday and not on Wednesday.
The typical masks of the Ambrosian Carnival are the Meneghino and the Cecca who parade together with the allegorical floats. The "chiacchiere" are the sweet symbol of the Milanese Carnival.
