Morellino di Scansano: Wine route, Wineries map

Morellino di Scansano

Morellino di Scansano is a DOCG red wine from the Tuscan Maremma, in the province of Grosseto, which requires a minimum use of Sangiovese grapes of at least 85%. We are in an area, Scansano and some neighboring municipalities, whose history refers first to the Etruscan presence, and then to the Roman one, and which therefore can boast a millenary history of vine cultivation.

Morellino di Scansano is a red wine also intended for young consumption, starting from the spring following the harvest, but the disciplinary provides for a "reserve" version that requires at least two years of aging, one of which in wooden barrels. In this case the fruity notes that refer to the small red fruit evolve towards the morello cherry and are enriched with spicy notes.
The ideal accompaniment refers to the traditional dishes of the Grosseto Maremma, from pasta dishes with wild boar or hare ragout, to meat dishes still linked to wild boar meat, without forgetting, for the fresher wine, some dishes based on products from the sea like octopus, eel and cod.
