Pomponesco (MN)

For those looking for places and itineraries unknown to most people, far from the stereotypes of mass tourism, Pomponesco - a village of Roman origins, a few kilometers from Sabbioneta and Mantua - represents a wonderful opportunity for a tourist and gastronomic visit.

Pomponesco, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy for the testimonies of an illustrious past, marked by the intervention of Giulio Cesare Gonzaga, who made it his small "ideal city" on the model of his cousin Vespasiano's Sabbioneta, enriches its tourist offer also due to its proximity to nature reserves such as the Garzaia di Pomponesco nature reserve. This is a protected natural area located in the river Po, about 6 km from the town, which has become a breeding area for various species of birds.

Pomponesco is also appreciated for its gastronomic traditions with real excellences of the Mantuan cuisine of the Po, starting with the salami and homemade pasta that cannot be missed in a lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurants, farmhouses and inns that are located in the village and its surroundings.

The history of Pomponesco has also been marked by the significant Jewish presence that finds traces in the eighteenth-century synagogue, which unfortunately has long since fallen into disuse and partly dismantled (today it is a simple deposit).
