Faicchio (BN)

Faicchio is a town in the province of Benevento, in Campania. The historic center of the town, to which several scattered districts belong, is located in an elevated position with respect to the course of the Titerno river and has developed around the medieval castle.

Palio depicting the patron saint is disputed between eight districts during a historical re-enactment event, Medievalia.

The history of this territory goes back to prehistoric times, while the sixth century BC. the Osco-Samnite megalithic walls that still surround the peak of Mount Acero date back to this day. There are also remains of the Roman and Lombard periods, and the history of the village was rich in medieval and Renaissance times, up to the 1600s when the castle was called "ducal" in honor of Duke De Martino.

In addition to the castle, the architectural profile of the village is characterized by several churches and the Convent of San Pasquale, which dominates the historic center from an elevated position. Interesting is the Grotta di San Michele, located on Monte Monaco di Gioia, about 500 meters above sea level, inside which frescoes with beautiful sacred scenes dating back to the 12th century and of clear Byzantine influence have been found. There are also several archaeological sites. In addition to the aforementioned megalithic walls of Monte Acero, there are testimonies of the Roman era, with the Fabio Massimo Bridge, the Roman Hypogeum Aqueduct and the Cryptoporticos.
