Castel di Sasso (CE)

Castel di Sasso is a small town in the province of Caserta, in Campania, located at the foot of Mount Friento, one of the peaks of the Trebulani Mountains. It is a common spread between different hamlets of which Sasso is the main among several hamlets of which Sasso, the main one, is located about 400 meters away. above sea level.

Sasso is a small medieval village that offers an enchanting panorama to the sight. It was built around 700 AD. on the initiative of the Dukes of Benevento, but legend attributes its foundation to the Lombard Gionata, who, having met some girls in this area who escaped the Saracens, chose one as his wife and then built a castle.

The name Sasso until 1863, alludes to the limestone cliff on which the town is located. You can still see the ruins of the Lombard castle, originally square in shape, and those of the church of San Pietro, which already existed in the 10th century and was declared an asset of historical interest in 1994: inside there are the remains of valuable Byzantine frescoes. Furthermore, in the locality of Pisciariello, there is an interesting archaeological site, in which two sarcophagi of exquisite workmanship were found in 1977, now preserved in the archaeological museum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.

Another late medieval village, partly in Catalan style, is that of Vallata.
