Canino (VT)

Canino is a Lazio municipality located a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast in the Lazio Maremma, in Tuscia, in the province of Viterbo. We are also a few kilometers from the border with Tuscany, in a hilly area whose landscape is dominated by olive trees. The history of Canino has very ancient origins that date back to the Etruscan period: the town was part of the nearby Vulci and only later became a territory in its own right.

Things to see and do in Canino

The production of olive oil is very important for this area, and for this reason the tradition of the Olive Festival has been renewed in Canino for more than fifty years in December. The event has grown over time and includes a rich entertainment program with visits to oil mills, conferences, guided oil tastings, historical re-enactments, craft markets and typical products, and more. At any time of the year it is therefore a must to taste the local oil, perhaps on bruschetta, pinched or in mostacciolo.

The historic center still preserves interesting buildings built by important families who have linked their name to the history of the town over time, such as the Bonaparte palace, the Farnesiana fountain and the Town Hall building. In fact, Alessandro Farnese was born here - later to become Pope Paul III - and it was also here that he lived and was buried together with the Luciano Bonaparte family, Napoleon's brother.

Canino is at the center of an area of great historical and archaeological interest so it can be a good starting point to spend a few hours discovering this stretch of Upper Lazio, visiting the Etruscan city of Vulci and its Necropolis with over 10,000 tombs. , the Castello dell'Abbadia and the Terme Apollinari.
