The Montella IGP Chestnut Festival, the most famous food and wine event in Irpinia, returns annually during the first weekends of November. In 1987, the chestnut received the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC), making it the only fruit and vegetable product in Italy to hold this distinction. In 1992, the EU Commission granted Montella Chestnut the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) recognition. Since 1977, this festival has been organized to promote the Montella Chestnut, an autumn fruit with excellent nutritional properties.
