Every year in Spello, on the occasion of Corpus Domini, between 1500 and 2000 meters of floral carpets and paintings inspired by religious motifs are created. Although the custom of honoring the deity with the throwing of floral material or flower arrangements dates back to ancient times, the tradition of the Infiorate in Spello is documented for the first time in 1602 in the accounting records of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (*) and subsequently, in 1831, in the Municipal Archives, when, on the occasion of the visit of Bishop Ignazio Cadolini who was to take possession of the city, the inhabitants of the houses overlooking the main street, through which the procession with the high prelate would pass, were invited to keep "clean and free from debris, the respective stretches of road in front of their houses and to scatter flowers or vegetables in abundance". Iconographic evidence relating to the Infiorate in Spello dates back to the early 1900s when Benvenuto Crispoldi (1886-1923), a painter and mayor of Spello, depicted in one of his paintings the passage of the Corpus Domini procession on the flower carpet.

In a short time, the artistic composition of the floral carpet took hold in Spello, transforming the feast of Corpus Domini into a joyful occasion where all families and then groups of increasingly skilled flower arrangers could compare their works and award those judged best for technical skill, precision, and creativity.

Organized for forty years by Pro Spello and since 2002 by the Association "Le Infiorate di Spello," with the patronage of the Region and local authorities, the event attracts thousands of visitors and tourists: since 2007, tens of thousands of people have come to Spello every year between Saturday and Sunday for the occasion.
